How it started

The Makara Peak Supporters were established in 1998 to plan and oversee the development of the Wellington City Council owned park and to help restore native forest. Our aim is to create a world-class mountain bike park with dual use (cycling and walking) tracks for all skill levels, in restored native forest.

Since 1998, volunteers have dug, shifted and compacted soil, chipped out rock, cut back branches, built retaining walls and small bridges and dug drainage channels to create over 40kms of track, as well as planting native trees and eradicating destructive pests.

A key objective has also been to encourage a greater number of young and novice riders to enjoy the parks’ thrills and scenery while gaining fitness and mountain-biking skills.

The Supporters

The Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park Supporters are a group of local residents, walkers, runners, conservationists, and mountain bikers who support the park through volunteer work and an annual membership subscription.

The park relies heavily on volunteer labour, donations and grants to build and maintain tracks and carry out conservation work. Over 4,500 volunteer hours are spent developing and maintaining the park each year.

Although there are numerous recreation reserve areas in Wellington that are developed mainly through volunteer efforts Makara Park remains the most popular. For these efforts the park has won numerous awards over the last 15 years.

Subscribe to the Makara Peak Supporters monthly (or there abouts) email to keep in touch with what's going on up the Peak. We'll let you know about track, conservation, and general news, up coming work parties, and upcoming events. This way you'll know about all the hard work the volunteers get up to to improve the Park and when you'll be able to come along to lend a hand. You can find past newsletters here.
