Join us on the Tree Trail at Mākara Peak

This April and May we invite you to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mākara Peak Mountain Bike Park by walking, running or biking our specially curated Tree Trail loop. Join one of our guided tours, or you can complete the loop anytime (from 4th April) by following the map and keeping an eye out for the special tree signage.

Participants will be guided along the Rimu and Miro trails, starting and finishing at the end of Saint Albans Avenue. The trail showcases significant native New Zealand tree species that have been planted over the past 25 years.

For those self-guiding along the Tree Trail, please be aware that Rimu and Miro are two way trails. Please also be considerate of other users when stopping to look at the trees.

The series of guided tours will be led by knowledgeable park volunteers with guest ecologists. This will be a chance to learn about the remarkable forest restoration that is underway within the park.

The guided tours will be held on:

•  Saturday 6 April, 3:30pm, walking tour.

•  Saturday 13 April, 10am, running tour.

•  Sunday 28 April, 10am biking tour. (Limited to 10 people)

• Saturday 11 May, 10am biking tour. (Limited to 10 people)

•  Saturday 25 May, 10am walking tour

Each tour will take around 1 hour. The loop is 3km long on easy grade 2 trails. The meeting point for all tours is the end of Saint Albans Avenue.

Mākara Peak 25th Anniversary Dinner

Join us to celebrate 25 years of mountain biking goodness at Mākara Peak. Find out how a scrub covered hillside has become one of the premier mountain biking destinations in the country.

Guest speakers include:

  • The Kennett brothers - NZ mountain biking pioneers and driving forces behind Mākara Peak

  • Paul Ward (Capital Kiwi) - find out how our national icon have found their way back to the forests of Mākara Peak

  • Robyn Wong - NZ mountain biking Olympian will share insights about what it takes to reach the pinnacle of the sport

When: Saturday 11 May 2024, doors and bar open from 6pm. Official welcome and start of proceedings from 6.45pm

Where: Wilton Bowling Club, 122 Wilton Road

What’s on offer: A great night out with like minded souls who have a passion for Mākara Peak. Ticket price proceeds will be reinvested into the park.

Food: Yes, delicious buffet meal included in the ticket price.

Drink: Yes, cash bar (which accepts eftpos but not credit cards)

Auction of cool stuff: Yes - auction proceeds will be reinvested into the park

Ticket price: $60 (child $40)

Meet the good folk from Capital Kiwi

The Capital Kiwi team, together with Ranger Mark will be on-site on Sunday 26 Nov to spread the word on how the MTB community can do their bit to make Mākara Peak a happy place for our Kiwi.  Our feathered national icon are now living amongst our trails, having made the move from their original release point in Terawhiti Station, and we need your support to keep them safe and thriving.

Come and have a chat with our team, we will be at the main carpark between 9 am to 2pm on Sunday. As an incentive, you might score your self some light refreshments for your ride.   

And a friendly reminder that the best thing you can do to keep our kiwi safe is to keep all dogs in the park on leash.

The Women of Dirt six-hour event, which runs from 10am to 4pm, is a fun, social women-only event that combines love of bikes, baking and being best dressed! Whether you're joining for the win, or just keen to participate, this event caters for everyone.

Queens Birthday dig - Live Wires

Over the next few months we’ll be bringing awesome back to the Grade 4 line on Live Wires with new features and better berms. It’s pretty easy trail building in one of the nicest parts of the park.

No experience necessary. Drop in for as long as you can. Every little bit helps.

Refreshments from Parrotdog and a BBQ thanks to Gipps St Butchery.

Either walk up Live Wires from the Car Park (we will close the track) or come down from the skills area and find us.

Ask for Coops, Ranger Mark, Lisa, Big Simon or Clint and they will sort you out.

Lower Starfish Dig Day

We had a good turn out last weekend at our first dig on the Lower Starfish. We’re working to modernise the trail (similar to Pōhatu and the rest of Starfish) by adding some new grade 4 features including drops, jumps and better berms.

Come along and make your mark on this iconic Wellington trail on Waitangi Monday from 3-5pm.

The track will be closed at the cellphone tower during digs given its pretty high speed and no one wants a rider to be hit by a grubber or spade (or vice versa). You can push up to SWIGG.

Kohanga o Porokapa Releasing

Meet at the end of South Karori Road at 10am. We’ll be releasing seedlings from tall grass before they disappear completely. We’ll provide a light lunch at 12:30pm. Gloves provided.

Releasing sessions aren't particularly glamorous, but they're a critical part of a successful planting season, so we need to do them (and need a few people to help us, each Thursday at 6pm).
